Ian Cunliffe ( Environmental Manager) with Dr David Bellamy OBE

Ian Cunliffe (above) from Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon, Essex needed to find an urgent solution for his long-term problem of managing the vast amounts of used beverage containers produced in the public 405 seat Food Hall in the Centre.( Location - D2, Upper Mall).

Whilst looking on the internet for environmental information Ian came across reverse vending recycling machines, his search lead to Reverse Vending Corporation - the first and only British company to successfully install reverse vending recycling technology in the UK.

Following an internal meeting with General Manager Hans Wustefeld (winner of the 2006 Shopping Centre Manager of the Year for large size centres) it was agreed that the installation of proven “reverse vending” recycling technology was the way forward in such an important public retail centre.

Fact file Eastgate shopping centre, Basildon

  • Owner: British Land

  • Annual footfall: 13.7 million

  • GLA: 76830 sq f - Covered shopping centre and multi storey car park, including offices of 11,800 sq metres

  • Catchment: 1,295,419 people within a 30 minute drive

  • Food Court: 400+ seats

The Challenge

Catherine Cunliffe, Food Court Manager with her staff had to manually collect up to 1000 PET bottles and cans every day, including weekends, then sort, bag and store the used beverage containers outside awaiting collection.

The Solution

As winners of the “Green Hero Award 2006” the Eastgate team led by Ian Cunliffe had researched best practices for recycling. Working with the technical team at Reverse Vending Corporation it was decided that the best solution would be the introduction of a purpose designed reverse vending recycling machine made specifically for the Eastgate Shopping Centre.

The bespoke reVend ™ 360 model reverse vending recycling machine was designed with two separation areas and two compactors. As the machine is sited in a busy public area, it was essential that all Health and Safety issues were met.

The reVend™ 360 RVM machine works on a three-phase 400-volt system allowing larger than normal compactors to be utilised (these being needed due to the high capacity thoughput) and complies fully with UK & EU safety standards.

Materials Handling

As the reverse vending recycling machine separates PET plastic bottles and cans (steel & aluminium) from the waste stream, a solution was required for recycling these “new” recyclates.
Reverse Vending Corporation’s strategic waste management partner involved its expert solution team to establish an infrastructure for on-site segregation, collection and storage of materials as well as providing complementary off-site services including detailed statistical reporting on the full waste audit trail.

1st in the UK

The installation of the reVend™ 360 reverse vending recycling machine is the first installation of a reverse vending recycling machine in a major UK retail shopping centre.

The Eastgate Shopping Centre, owned by British Land, a leading FTSE corporation, has paved the way for other leading UK shopping centres to follow and help the environment through positive recycling of used beverage containers.

On- Site Training

Reverse Vending Corporation and Avery Weigh-Tronix engineers trained Catherine Cunliffe, Eastgate’s Food Court Manager and her staff in the ‘basics’ of the recycling machine.

Catherine then ensured that all relevant staff had undertaken the correct training for daily cleaning of the machine and ensured that they were competent in changing the bags in the machine when full. Also, it was ensured that that all Health and Safety issues where adhered to throughout.

Maintenance and Installation More >>>

Should any problem occur with the Reverse Vending Machine, Catherine Cunliffe, can ring a dedicated telephone number connected to a professional customer support department at Avery Weigh -Tronix which provides maximum maintenance support 24/7 over the telephone.

If the problem cannot be resolved, Avery's customer support department will dispatch a field technician to the Eastgate Shopping Centre within 24 hours to solve the problem on-site.
Avery Weigh-Tronix technicians also carry a stock of spare parts in their vans and all their engineers are fully trained in reVend™ reverse vending recycling machines.

Waste collection before the reverse vending installation

Catering staff had to manually collect bottles and cans.

Frequently , the valuable recyclates became contaminated with mixed & dirty materials

After the Installation More >>>

The materials are separated in the machine and reduced to one tenth of their original size by large compactors .

.......

The recyclates are then baled and guaranteed to be recycled

Catering staff now simply put bottles and cans into the Reverse Vending Recycling machine which automatically separates materials into containers. The collected material is then baled and sent to be recycled. The material is guaranteed not to go to expensive and “environmentally unfriendly” landfill sites.

An enthusiastic public have also voluntarily started to use the reverse vending recycling machine – a unique “public participation experience”.
As an environmental pioneer, the Eastgate Shopping Centre now successfully recycles its used beverage containers away from the general waste stream and thereby positively helps the environment.
