“ I believe that  initiatives like Reverse Vending Recycling Machines installed in shopping centre's embody my belief in how we can work together to save the planet.Every day we hear stories we are all going to be dead by 2050 because of carbon emissions, the forests being cut down and the fishing stocks being depleted, but we have the solutions in technology and our scientists, we just need more money invested in them".

Reverse Vending

Instead of spitting out gnarly junk food we know we should trash, Reverse Vending machines actually want to eat your trash. You simply insert unwanted recyclables, and the machine sorts, crushes and shreds them. Monitors publish recycling statistics — great for schools or companies who want to turn their people green.

UK first

The reverse-vending machine is a great success as it encourages lots of young people to recycle.

Reverse-vending already happens in countries all over Europe and in America. However, this is the first in the UK.

Reverse-vending also saves our school hundreds of pounds because it reduces the amount of waste that needs to be taken away."

Joe, Cambridgshire

Alan Stevens, associate principal at Sawtry Community College, said his school's win in the environment category spurred the children on to do even greener things this year.

Since winning, the pupils have put in greater efforts to preserve energy and have made improvements to their reverse vending machine, where pupils can dump their cans to be recycled. The scheme, which has since been taken up by Orton Longueville School, will hopefully stand Sawtry Community College in good stead as it goes for the Crest environmental award, which rewards work on green issues and is run by the Times Educational Supplement (TES).

Mr Stevens said: "The award spurred the students onto even greater things and gave them a real buzz."It gave them a status in school and let them know their work was something of real value. It gave them extra momentum to continue with the project."

Reinier Evers reveals the latest in instant gratification

A co-operative venture between Stirlingshire Vending and Reverse Corporation brings reVend & Spend. Consumers drop in used drinks cans and it crushes the waste into the correct recycling components. The machine also issues coupons for other goods as an incentive to use the machine more often. Instead of bringing a new twist to retailing, these new concepts are bending vending.

Reinier Evers is a trends expert and founder of trend websites Trendwatching.com and Springwise.com.

Have we the bottle to make a change?

Call for packaging deposit scheme for Scotland

Mr Pringle suggested that a national deposit scheme in Scotland could involve retailer recycling facilities, reverse-vending machines or alternative collection points.

20 PENCE SENSE: The deposit scheme will be familiar to anyone who has ever returned a Barr's glass bottle. My scheme could work in a number of ways, including using retailers, reverse vending machines or alternative collection points. I will be pressing for the policy to be in the next Liberal Democrat manifesto. It's time to go back to the future and use an old idea for a new purpose.

Friends of the Earth said it wanted to see more "reverse vending machines" - which allow consumers to recycle bottles and cans immediately. "Britain has been living in the dark ages in terms of recycling," said a spokesman. "There is this technology, such as reverse vending machines, which are used abroad, and we should be making more use of it. Friends of the Earth says it wants Government recycling targets raised from 20% to more than 90 per cent.
