The Evening Telegraph Education Awards

More than 100 entries were received in eight different categories, making it a tough job for the judges, made up of retired headteachers, local industry experts and a representative from the Local Education Authority.

Alan Stevens, associate principal at Sawtry Community College, said his school's win in the environment category spurred the children on to do even greener things this year.

Since winning, the pupils have put in greater efforts to preserve energy and have made improvements to their reverse vending machine, where pupils can dump their cans and plastic bottles to be recycled.

The scheme, which has since been taken up by Orton Longueville School, will hopefully stand Sawtry Community College in good stead as it goes for the Crest environmental award, which rewards work on green issues and is run by the Times Educational Supplement (TES).

Mr Stevens said: "The award spurred the students onto even greater things and gave them a real buzz.

"It gave them a status in school and let them know their work was something of real value. It gave them extra momentum to continue with the project." More >>
